Established in 1889, the BTU has chalked up over a century of achievement in helping teachers throughout Queensland, and is now the voice of more than 43,00 teachers in the Queensland Government's primary schools, secondary schools, special schools, senior colleges, cafe colleges and other educational facilities. The list of vital services which the Union provides for its members includes : Today, more than 125 years later, the Queensland Teachers' Union is the maximum democratic and representative voice of the teaching profession in the state. Representing more than 43,00 teachers in the Queensland Government's primary schools, secondary schools, notable schools, senior colleges, cafe colleges and other educational facilities. A brief history of the Queensland Teachers' Union. Teachers have an urgent responsibility in guiding their students’ educational and social development. The primary professional responsibility of teachers is the welfare of all students within their care. Teachers shall assert their professional, industrial and civil rights and support their colleagues in the defense of these rights. We are here to help you in times of difficulty, to negotiate better pay and conditions and to work on your behalf to encourage the teaching profession. Campaigning with members for the improvement of teacher and school leader salaries is one of the BTU’s most crucial roles. THAT State Council notes that BTU activity during the preceding state and federal elections was based on a position endorsed by State Council of supporting those candidates who supported the BTU’s position in relation to industrial relations and public education, and that this position continues. THAT State Council notes that this strategy involved a range of activities, including inviting supportive candidates to schools and BTU branch meetings and support for such candidates in the form of attendance at rallies, campaign launches and functions. Because it was directed at the state government, it fell within the definitions of election expenditure, which we have to report to the Electoral Commission of Queensland. This area is only available to BTU members. The Queensland Teachers' Education center (QTEC) is responsible for the coordination, planning and delivery of the Union's member education and training program. The Union offers a range of information sessions, courses and conferences to Union Reps and activists to promote them in their role and to help them to become more knowledgeable, energetic and effective representatives of the BTU in the workplace. The Union's commitment to fresh teachers is a priority and is a mighty focus of the training program throughout the year. These conferences and courses yield opportunities for fresh teachers to contribute to Union priorities and directions. The Union offers a range of courses and seminars focusing on supporting its members by developing skills in the areas of negotiation, oppose resolution, campaigning, public speaking, pushy communication and many others. QTEC includes training and professional development sessions for: At this stage, the training is being offered to activists in regional areas only however it is rehearsed to enlarge the program in the close coming to include metropolitan activists. Attendance at the BTU professional development seminars contributes to your Queensland College of Teachers' requirements for continuing professional development. The Union is committed to the provision of services and training for members statewide, including those in rural and remote areas. There are three meeting rooms for smaller groups, training sessions and meetings.
