What you should know about Far North Qld Amateur Turf Club

Sports Club in Cairns

The Far North Queensland Beginner Turf Club was founded in 1959 as a coastal version of the historical Oak Park races and as a way of bringing city and country together. At the time of the first Carnival, the Committee consisted of 10 people from the outback station properties and local businessmen who conducted 6 races on each day, Sponsors were not known as such at the time, but local businesses and regional branches of national companies either volunteered their services or were approached by the Committee to encourage the local Carnival. Jockeys were, as the Club name suggests, novice riders and came mainly from stations in outback areas of the region. In order to qualify, horses were needed to be grassed and could not have raced in a professional meeting. This trend continues to this day as many uses the Carnival as an absolve to sample the sights of Tropical North Queensland. Southern Race callers such as Keith loud were present in the formative years, with local Dick Chant and more recently, Wayne Wilson in attendance as racing commentators. Eminent race presenter and identity, Bart Sinclair has attended to official duties as the racing correspondent since 1991 and has written pieces on the Amateurs for The Courier Mail and other publications each year. The vogue Committee comprises the President and 9 Committee members who save and flourish the event that has embedded itself in the social and sporting calendar of the region, indeed of the country. In conjunction with Cairns Amateurs’ committee and marketing team, the pair, who think and operate like clockwork, are working on a program that has been created to receive the region’s number one social event to a total fresh level. We only have to look at each other to know what the other is thinking and what needs to be done. I recall in our beginning year, Christina carrying a trestle table above her head to assist in selling more drink tickets to retain people happy and that’s been our mantra from the start. We work tirelessly as a small team to present the best that we can to make the customer’s experience truly special, said Mr Thornton. In total the program comprises 14 individual events, five of which are innovative newcomers and details of which will be released in future weeks. As the CEO of Cairns Amateurs Carnival, Mr Thornton said that each year the committee reevaluates what was good, what could be improved and what is needed when it comes to planning the following year’s event. Our strategy is committed and it is working. We have witnessed a firm increase in engagement and numbers of racegoers with each year. Thornton says the Cairns Amateurs Carnival is no longer a one size fits all’ approach with racegoers spanning several demographics, geographies and demanding diverse wants and needs. It is complex but in the digital age, which we are embracing, it has become easier to do so, he said. It was created to bring the country to the city and flourish business ties over a relaxing environment. Culturally, the racing fashion and Fashion on the Field competition is a radiant highlight. Looking back at worn imagery, many a statesman and their partners throughout the decades, and the temporary fashion trends is a historical snapshot of the region and our times. They can go to any race day around the country, but we have something exceptional here, not only do we have one of the superior backyards in the world, with two World Heritage listed areas, we provide an intimate insight in to a region letting its hair down in spectacular style, he said. This event is release of charge to members and will produce a welcome social interaction while hearing firsthand about fresh developments. This event is free of charge to members and will bear a welcome social interaction while hearing first hand about new developments.
